# Handle a conflict

> Resolve contradictions in your knowledge without losing history.

When new content contradicts something already in your [Vault](/concepts/vault) at a higher [trust level](/concepts/trust-levels), Orbit flags it as a conflict instead of silently overwriting. You decide which version wins.

## Steps

1. Open the conflict from **Needs Action** in your [Inbox](/use/process-inbox).
2. Review both versions side by side — each shows who filed it, when, and why.
3. Choose:
   * **Keep existing** — reject the new version.
   * **Replace** — make the new one canonical, archive the old.
   * **Keep both** — if they aren't actually mutually exclusive.
4. Confirm. Both versions stay in your history regardless — nothing is destroyed.

## Why conflicts are surfaced, not auto-resolved

Silent overwrites are how knowledge bases quietly rot. By forcing conflicts into the open, Orbit keeps one source of truth while preserving the full record of how it got there.
